D.A.R.E. is a collaborative effort by
D.A.R.E. certified Law Enforcement officers,
educators, students, parents and the community to offer an educational program in the
classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and teenagers. The emphasis of D.A.R.E is to
help students recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence
them to experiment with drugs and violence.
The D.A.R.E program
is organized into 17, 45 to 60 minute lessons to be taught by law enforcement officers.
One lesson is taught each week for the semester.
Police Officers
George Claywell and Mark Harris are D.A.R.E for the Columbia Police Department. They
currently teach the D.A.R.E program to 5th grades at the John Adair Middle School.
The D.A.R.E program was implemented in Columbia in 1990.
